Tryout Policy:
All teams formed to play in the MAYSA Classic League or in "out of
district" state-level leagues (First Division, Premier) are required
to hold open tryouts at all ages (this policy applies only to ages U-11
and above, as all teams below U-11 are recreational). Teams formed by invitation
or without open tryout opportunities will not be registered by the VASC.
Organization of tryouts (establishment of dates, times, locations, hiring
of evaluators, collecting of tryout fees) will be done by the Club in conjunction
with the Alliance and its competitive partner, the Madison 56ers. Official
dates for player notification and response will be set by MAYSA. Coaches
for prospective teams will be invited/encouraged to attend tryouts and
participate with independent evaluators at Classic tryouts, and observe
Premier tryouts, but will not be paid to evaluate players for teams they
will coach. The Club will make every attempt to advertise tryout opportunities
to maximize attendance by interested players. Players wishing to be considered
for a team holding tryouts who are not able to attend the tryouts must
contact the Club with as much advance notice as possible to discuss alternative
evaluation options. Teams formed through tryouts are in effect through
July 31 of the following year, at which time an open tryout process will
again be used to form subsequent year's teams.
It is the policy of the Verona Area Soccer Club to conduct its tryouts
in conjunction with its partners in "the Alliance." This is
a consortium of clubs (currently consisting of Verona, Magic, Regent, and
56ers) which joined in a cooperative venture to help in forming competitive
teams in the Madison area. Among the goals of the Alliance are: use of
a combined tryout model encompassing all participating clubs; formation
of classic teams within the local clubs wherever possible (some state league
teams may form within local clubs from time to time as well, but the goal
is to locate these teams under the 56ers in most cases); working cooperatively
to "pool" players from multiple clubs to form new teams where
there are not sufficient opportunities locally; and, concentrating formation
of state league teams in the Madison 56ers, a club with the coaching expertise
and infrastructure to best develop and support the top-end player.
In accordance with the VASC's mission statement, where two (or more) new
classic teams form at a given age level, they will be formed on the basis
of parity, rather than a high/low team formation process. This will be
accomplished using a draft system with coaches making alternate picks.
This process will be supervised - where appropriate - by a member of the
VASC board or its designee. Such a draft system could take into account
school or geographic considerations in picking players. Where two or more
existing classic teams are being formed for the subsequent season, it is
the assumption that players will be rostered with the same team as the
previous year unless they ask to be considered by another team (the tryout
registration forms include a box for making such a choice). The purpose
of classic teams within our club is to develop players, maximize number
of kids participating, and to prepare them to move to a higher level if
they so choose, but not to form teams within the club with the aspiration
to achieve state league status. We view this latter role as that of our
competitive partner. We feel higher level training is best accomplished
within a competitive club with professional coaching staff. Therefore,
we support system of team formation based on parity in the classic league.
It is the Club's policy that the parents of each respective team will
choose their coach for the season. The Club will give its best effort to
supply qualified coaches for teams to choose from, but the final decision
is that of the parents. Further, if a coaching arrangement is made, and
the coach is going to be compensated by the team, then it is the team's
responsibility to pay the coach - the Club does not pay any coach. The
Club's Director of Coaching will be available to assist in this process
whenever needed.
The role of the Verona Area Soccer Club will not be to choose members
of teams. As has always been the case, coaches will have the final say
about which players will be on their rosters. The Club will not be the
final arbiter in issues of player selection, but will provide oversight
to make
sure player selections are made in accordance with the Club's principles.
It should be noted that while open tryouts are an imperfect process, they
provide a generally accepted method of providing an objective assessment
of soccer skill, and a way for players with the necessary ability and commitment
to have fair access to openings on all competitive teams.
