Present: Brenda Schmidt, ,Barb Smith, Brian Severson, Sara Landolt, Scott Clement, Bob Blasdel, Jon Sutcliffe, Mary Buckman, Jeff Petersen High school boys' tryout There have been concerns raised about the Club's tryout policy (For a review of the policy visit the tryout section of the site.) as it pertains to existing teams. The Board stands by its policy as a way to ensure that every player desiring to compete at the classic or premier level has a chance to be seen by coaches and rated by an evaluator. There will be a tryout informational meeting for U-15 through U-19 boys on Saturday, Dec 2, 10:30 at the Verona Library. The number of interested players will determine the configuration of the tryout, possibly combining age groups to scrimmage. Coaches and potential coaches will be asked to observe along with the evaluator. Mary has tentatively reserved space at Breakaway for Sunday, December 17, 7-9am. Board positions The Board considered eliminating several positions since the Club now employs an administrator. After a review of the bylaws, this will be addressed at a future meeting. Openings on the Board for next year include secretary, treasurer, volunteer coordinator, vice president and possibly others. Coaches are encouraged to give some thought to which parents on their teams may be interested in becoming more involved with the Club and submit names to the Board for some friendly persuasion. VASC scholarship policy Bob proposed detailing a policy for granting scholarships to players to cover soccer expenses. Traditionally scholarships have been granted upon request by the coach on a player's behalf. Questions to be considered - do we require that the players be on a VASC team, do we help with both indoor and outdoor fees, does MAYSA have some scholarship money available to players, is there grant money available from other sources? Jon suggested that assisting any needy players is a reasonable use of a portion of the Club's considerable cash reserve. Club liability Brian will check with the Club's insurance carrier and Mary with MAYSA about the Club's liability when allowing players not officially associated with VASC or MAYSA to practice with VASC teams. Do these players need to sign a waiver? Also, is the school district, city or Club liable for injuries when VASC teams practice in area gyms? VASC/MAYSA 5v5 tournament After a year's hiatus, the Club 5v5 tournament returns in an earlier time slot. The Club will partner with MAYSA to hold the tournament Saturday, April 29 (and possibly Sunday, April 30) at Reddan. MAYSA's role as co-sponsor will be to use their resources to get the word out to teams, provide the venue, assign referees, work with teams to schedule season games around the event. VASC will be responsible for providing goals; advertising in Soccer America; providing volunteers for field marshalling, concessions, etc; printing brochures. Profits from registration and concessions will be split 50/50. The Club will have banners or some other kind of marker to identify donated goals. Other Bob requested that Board meeting times be changed until the beginning of the girls' soccer season. Next meetings are Tuesday, Jan 16; Tuesday, Feb 19; Tuesday, March 19. Mary will set up a appointment with a representative from Steffans for Jan 9, 7p to meet with Scott and Brenda to consider their proposal for Club uniforms. Brenda, Scott and Mary will also meet with a rep from Middleton Cycle at their Middleton location to look at their selection. Brian will contact Tim Stevens about setting up a skills development clinic in January for U8-U10 (possibly up to U12) players. Will check space availability in the Verona school district or the Oregon fieldhouse. Dates to remember:
