October 2002 Minutes

Next meeting is November 18, 7 p.m., Verona Public Library.

Present: Jeff Petersen, Mary Buckman, Scott Clement, Jim Kramer, Brenda Schmidt, Andy Slawek, Dan Nuthals, Paul Anjeski, Mary Mattison.

Administrators' Report
At the VASC premier fields the 2nd field is ready to be used for next season. A $30 insurance rider was added to cover the Port-A-Potty at the premier fields. Currently the club is borrowing MAYSA's liner to line the fields. The liners owned by MAYSA are easier to use and more dependable than the one currently owned by the club. Dan Nuthals will look into prices of a lightweight liner so the club will have its own. Jeff distributed a financial report to the board and financial detail to the Treasurer.

Premier Fields
Andy Slawek has checked on the cost of buying a stencil to mark the VASC fields with a soccer ball and the words Verona Soccer. The possibility of putting up "A frames" or a fence to keep balls from going into the valley on the west side of the the fields was discussed. There was discussion of selling advertising space on the field or the A frames or fence. Also discussed was moving the field three feet to the east so the benches for players would not be so close to the brush and dropoff.

The south goal is beginning to lean in. The goals have stakes that hold them very securely to the ground. The goals need repainting. Andy Slawek volunteered to take care of this. Two more sets of player benches will be purchased so both fields will have two sets in the spring. The anchors used to secure the benches did not work. Dan will look into alternative device.

5v5
Advertising at the 5v5 tournament in the spring was discussed as a means of better promoting local businesses. For the 5v5 the VASC wants to get the word out about what is available in Verona itself. WIBA, Channel 3, and other businesses have expressed interest in participating in promoting the tournament. Mary also expressed the need for someone to assume the role of Tournament Director. She has run the tournament for years and would be happy to mentor, but feels it is appropriate that someone else be the point-person.

Footskills Clinics
Information on the clinics offered for the Alliance (Verona, Magic, Regent, Madsion 56ers) will be posted on the web site www.veronasoccer.org. We will attempt to group same-age kids and encourage full or partial team registration. The goal of the footskills training sessions is to provide a training opportunity at low cost (hopefully a break-even proposition). Clubs will supplement the cost if registration charged is insufficient to cover expenses.

Tryouts and Alliance Contract
There were very few changes made since the last time the VASC reviewed the proposed Alliance contract. There was discussion that the Alliance is interested in a single payment model for tryouts, rather than participants paying either the Alliance or the 56ers. It was felt this could be worked out but didn't need to be specifically delineated in a contract. The Alliance is discussing the possibility of offering "Bridge Teams" at certain ages if there is need and if it doesn't compete with our competitive partner. There was some thought that this would be best at the high school level only.

There was also further discussion about the possibility of modifying club policy to not require tryouts for classic teams at high school ages. An alternative would be to provide a sign-up service. Such a sign-up could be in late fall after the competitive teams have made their offers to players.

In-House Proposal for U9 and Below
Currently Magic Soccer Club is running its own in-house league for players that are U9 and below. Regent Soccer Club and Verona Area Soccer Club are considering joining with Magic in forming an Alliance in-house league in Fall 2003 for U7, U8, U9 ages. The advantages to such a change would be to significantly reduce cost, to have all games played at the same location each week (either at Country Grove or West Towne), to have all games scheduled at 9:00, 10:00, or 11:00 on Saturday mornings, and to have permanent appropriate sized goals and marked fields. A meeting time is being scheduled to talk to team managers and parents of players that will be in this age group next year.

Board Positions
The annual transition of board positions will take place in March. Dan Nuthals will move up to President. Jim Kramer will stay on as treasurer. Paul Anjeski will stay on as referee director.
