Minutes for the May 20, 2002 VASC Meeting

Present: Scott Clement, Dan Nuthals, Mary Mattison, Jim Kramer, Brenda Schmidt, Andy Slawek, Paul Anjeski, Jeff Petersen, Mary Buckman, Sandy Sargent Introduction of new secretary, Mary Mattison, and thanks noted to Trish Schleicher, outgoing secretary, for all her work.

Sandy Sargent was present for the initial part of the meeting to voice her concerns on how the Alliance tryout process is conducted. Sandy presented a proposal for a survey to help gather information on parent's feelings regarding tryouts for select teams (Classic, 1st Division, Premier) and also obtain feedback from parents of Recreational players. Dan Nuthals will review Sandy's suggestions and the club will consider fielding some questionnaire as part of the next newsletter later in the summer.

Coaches for 2002-2003: Andy Slawek reported that coaches are needed for the following teams for the 02-03 season: Girls - U13 Rec, U13 Classic, U14 Classic Boys - U10 Rec, U11 Rec, U11 Classic, U12 Rec, U12 Classic, U15 Classic If you know of anyone interested in coaching at these age levels please contact Andy at adjt@charter.net.

Uniforms - colors: Regent has made a move to change its club colors to forest green to be more like the Memorial Spartans. A question was raised about changing the VASC colors to match the VASD colors. Mary Buckman noted forest green was chosen originally so that the club was not confused with the school district. Paul voiced a concern that the club should not be seen as a feeder for the high school and such a color change would imply that relationship. It was agreed that no change warranted.

Football vs Soccer: The question has come up about the problem of kids having to make a choice between playing soccer and football. This is a particular issue in classic soccer teams in that the level of commitment and expectations for attendance are fairly substantial and likely to conflict with football practices and games. It was thought that doing both sports would be most workable if the soccer team was recreational. In some cases it might be possible (if there are sufficient roster spots available) for a kid to play on a classic team only during the spring season.

Tryout Process for Select Teams: Mary Buckman reported the VASC needs volunteers to help check in the Verona Club members for tryouts. The tryouts begin May 23rd (see VASC Website for all the pertinent dates for various ages) and check-in times are roughly 4:30 to 5:30 and from 6:00 to 7:00pm. If you can help sign up players during this time for an hour or two please contact Mary at buckmanmary@yahoo.com.

Recreational Team Registration: Brenda Schmidt said there was a good turnout at the registration night held on May 15th from players who want to be placed on a team. New teams that signed up included one U10. one U9, two U8, and one U7.

Administrators Report: Jeff Petersen distributed the financial report and noted the tax return for 2001had been filed. Jeff will contact Sara Landolt about updating the board of directors listing on the web site.

5 v 5 Tournament: The club received many good comments about the tournament. In all there were 53 teams participating and the club's portion of the proceeds will likely be about $3,000. These funds will go into the club's reserve for field development/infrastructure. All of the people who helped as volunteers were especially appreciated. Suggestion for next year is to have referees come 30 minutes early so there is more time to discuss the tournament rules which are slightly different than AYSA rules.

Other Issues: The bylaws will be reviewed by Scott Clement before the next meeting. Changes have been made over the years that are not referenced in the current bylaws. Next meeting: June 24, 7:00 pm, Stockade Restaurant (PLEASE NOTE THE CHANGE FROM THE NORMAL 3RD MONDAY OF MONTH)
