January 2003 Minutes

Next meeting is February 24, 2003, 7 p.m., The Junction House Restaurant

Present: Jeff Petersen, Mary Buckman, Scott Clement, Dan Nuthals, Mary Mattison.

Team and Individual Photos:
Jeff Erdman from Sport Page Photography presented information on the different products his company offers for soccer pictures. Families are able to choose from an array of packages or just order individual photos. VASC will look into reserving a day for an all-club picture day. Photos to be taken after uniforms are received and before the Fall 2003 season starts. Information on different types of products can be found at www.grins-sportspage.com.

Spring Soccer Registrations:
Registrations for spring soccer have been received from three high school teams (U15, U16, and U17-18). Deadlines for sign-up for classic teams is February 3rd and recreational teams is February 10th.

Practice Fields:
One of the Lincoln Street fields is going to be turned into a flag football field. To make up for this loss of a field both fields at Cross Country Park will be opened to the VASC for scheduling practices. Scheduling for practice fields can begin in mid-March by emailing buckmanmary@yahoo.com or by calling the club line at 848-7616 and leaving a message.

Footskills
The clinics are completely full and have a good representation from VASC. About 20 participants were sent to the Magic Club footskills clinic at Memorial High School as all the Verona sessions were full. Feedback thus far is very positive.

In-House League
Regent soccer club has tabled its in-house league discussions for now for U9, but will take the issue up again in the Spring to decide what to do next season. There are enough U7 and U8 with VASC and Magic to make a go of the in-house league for these age groups in the fall.

VASC/MAYSA 5v5 Tournament
Brochures will be printed as soon as the remaining logos are received. Brochures will go out in coach/manager folders at the Spring meeting. They will also be available at Millers, the Verona Library, Middleton Cycle and online at www.veronasoccer.org. Our Alliance partners will also be asked to provide a link to the brochure and to promote the tournament within their clubs. Andy Slawek has a couple of ideas for the tournament logo. Text for the radio ads needs to be written and also air times and dates decided. Andy may not be able to make it to the tournament because of work conflicts. We will need to make sure there is someone else to help Scott with the tournament direction. VASC teams are very strongly encouraged to participate in the tournament and families will be asked to volunteer some time to help make it work.

VASC Dance/Fundraiser:
The Spring Kick-off dance will be Saturday, May 10, 2003, at Wildcat Lanes. The band will be Moondance. There are many soccer and other local events this weekend so we are hoping this will bring in people from all clubs. All teams will be provided with tickets ($8.50 each) with their spring schedules. This is one of the main club fund raising opportunities.

Upcoming Dates:
February 24 (Mon.) - VASC monthly meeting, one week later due to schedule conflicts
March 13 (Thurs.) - TENTATIVE spring managers meeting with spring schedules handed out
March 24 (Mon) - VASC monthly meeting, one week later due to schedule conflicts
May 10 - VASC dance with Moondance

VASC Fields:
Out of 50 emails, 6 replied for people who will help with painting the goals at the club fields. This work will be done in early April. The following equipment needs to be rented since none was volunteered:
compressor
portable generator
sanding equipment
white metal paint
primer paint
A bobcat will need to be rented to do the gravel for the driveway. Andy Slawek knows of someone that should give the club a good deal on this. Gravel will need to be ordered to repair a section of the parking log. Also, Andy is willing to paint "VERONA SOCCER" in the middle circle of our two premier fields. He has found a way to make large, inexpensive stencils and is willing to donate the money for most of this cost. Andy has a sprayer and the orange or white paint would last two years if diluted. This would look great and make our fields standout. Cost to VASC $71.00. "VERONA" would be inside the top part of center circle (curved) and "SOCCER" along bottom part inside of circle facing the bleachers. MAYSA has no rules or regulations against doing this.

Coaches :
Andy sent an email out twice this year to all coaches stating if they wanted help with practices or work with individuals or practice planning, he would help out. He received no replies. An email was also sent to all U10 coaches asking how many kids they think would be trying out for classic teams and if anyone is interested in coaching U11 classic and what the requirements are. U10 coaches were also informed that if parents/kids are interested in Classic soccer, he would set-up a meeting to speak to a group of them and explain the process, cost and what is involved. So far, no one has responded.

Coach Licensing :
MAYSA put out a request for locations to hold coaching clinic and it was decided that it would be a good idea to offer to host one of the clinics in Verona. We will follow up on securing a location, dates and times, and inform our members. We will ask Andy to coordinate this with MAYSA.
