Becoming A Referee
All players 12 years and above are encouraged to become a referee. It's a great
way to learn more about the rules of the game and make money, too.
USSF Entry Level Clinics are
multi-day courses for people who would like to become soccer officials for the
first time, either at Level 8 or Level 9. Referees who are currently certified
at Level 9 and who want to advance to Level 8 may take either a Level 8 Entry
Level Clinic or a Level 9 to 8 Course Clinic. These clinics are offered through
the joint efforts of the Madison Area Soccer Referee Unit (MASRU), the Madison
Area Youth Soccer Association (MAYSA) and various local youth soccer clubs,
under the guidance of the Wisconsin Program for Referee Development (WPRD).
You must be at least 12 years old at the time to take a Level 9
Entry Level Clinic. This clinic is a 10-hour course with an exam at the end of
the last day. All the materials you need will be handed out the first day. You
must score 75 or better on the exam to pass the clinic; upon successful
completion you will be a certified United States Soccer Federation Recreational
Referee and will be able to officiate U7 through U14 recreational games. (Consideration
is always given to the age difference between players and the referee.)
You must be at least 14 years old at the time to take a Level 8
Entry Level Clinic or a Level 9 to 8 Course Clinic; this minimum age
requirement is now being strictly applied by the WPRD. This clinic is a 16-hour
course with an exam at the end of the last day. All the materials you need will
be handed out the first day. You must score 75 or better on the exam to pass the
clinic; upon successful completion you will be a certified United States Soccer
Federation Referee and will be able to be a referee at any level at which you
and the referee assignor feel comfortable. This includes both
recreational and competitive games and WYSA-sanctioned
tournaments. You are also be eligible to be an assistant referee for any level at
which you feel comfortable.
